The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 made the first major changes in school meals in 15 years with the intention of raising a healthier generation of students.  The new meal standards align school meals with the latest  dietary guidelines. The final standards ensure students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week, a substantial increase in whole grain-rich foods, only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties, a limited number of calories based on the age of students  served to ensure proper portion size, and a reduction in amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium.
